1952 presidential triumph of General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first Republican in the White House in two decades, 34th President of the United States, b. Denison, Tex.; his nickname was Ike.

1953 In the midst of the Korean War, to which President Truman committed US troops in 1950. The Korean hostilities prompted the United States to strengthen its military commitment to NATO. The war also hastened the signing of the Japanese peace treaty, the formation of SEATO and the creation of American security pacts with Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. The Korean war ended in 1953.

The death of Stalin, Soviet Communist leader and head of the USSR from the death of V. I. Lenin (1924) until his own death on Mar. 5, 1953, ushered in a new era in Soviet history.

McCarthyism: When the Republicans assumed control of Congress in 1953, Sen. McCarthy, who had been reelected in 1952, became chairman of the Senate permanent investigations subcommittee (Government Operations Committee), a post in which he wielded great power; he used his position to exploit the public's fear of Communism. Through widely publicized hearings, the use of unidentified informers, and reckless accusation, McCarthy doggedly pursued those whom he classified as Communists and subversives.

Nuclear Disarmament: The first thermonuclear bomb was exploded in 1952 at Enewetak by the United States, the second in 1953 by Russia (then the USSR). With the proliferation of nuclear weapons, concern over the situation became more acute. In 1952 a UN Disarmament Commission was formed under the Security Council. It became the repository for all disarmament proposals under UN auspices. In 1953 a commission subcommittee was set up, consisting of Canada, France, Great Britain, the United States, and the USSR.

Popular Culture

1952 Jackson Pollock, abstract artist pioneering his method of "direct" painting, moved to Sidney Janis Gallery. Such works as the 1952 Blue Poles and 1953 Portrait of a Dream were moderately successful.

Marilyn Monroe appeared in her first starring role in the potboiler Don't Bother to Knock. It was followed by the equally ridiculous but equally successful Niagara (1953). Monroe had become a strong box-office attraction, and her breathless sexuality helped make hits of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and River of No Return (1954), among other films.

Maureen Connolly 1934-69, American tennis player became, at 16, the youngest player to win the U.S. national singles.
